Free childcare for working parents of 3 and 4 year olds for 30hrs a week – Information for schools

From September 2017 the Government is proposing to increase the amount of funded hours for three and four year olds.

Currently all three and four year old are entitled to 15 hours free early education entitlement (FFE) but from September 2017 children of working parents will be eligible for 1140 hours of government funded childcare per year – the equivalent of 30 hours per week, over 38 weeks of the year. This is currently being referred to by the government as ’30 hours free childcare’.

Schools and childcare providers will be encouraged to make provision for three and four year olds, available five days a week and in school holidays (times to be confirmed by DfE). This can take place on one site or can be shared between providers.

As work with the 30 hours free childcare is gathering momentum we want to keep you informed with key information on developments in Durham and we plan to do this on a regular basis through information updates, emails and briefings.

We hope you enjoy reading this first update (attached) and find the information useful.

This item applies to all schools, including academies in the following phases:

  • Nursery
  • Primary (including infant and junior)
  • Special
