CEIAG AT VILLA REAL

ARE YOU AN EMPLOYER?

We would love to hear from you. Can you support our young people to develop the skills they need to become productive members of the community?

Good career guidance ensures that all young people, whatever their needs, background or ambitions, know the options open to them and can make the informed choices needed to fulfil their potential. This is particularly important for young people in England recognised as having SEND. Far too often, these young people can be held back by negative stereotypes and assumptions about their limitations.

Villa Real Careers Provision actively works to develop knowledge and understanding of career opportunities. The Gatsby Benchmarks are used to provide a stable careers programme based on theory and access to the labour market.

Primary

Pupils within the Primary phase will develop careers understanding throughout their curriculum.  Where it is appropriate, they will be encouraged to think about how jobs and careers are identified within stories, people who help us and other curriculum topics.

KS3

Where appropriate students within KS3 will be supported to develop their understanding of how they can influence their own future, and support their understanding of opportunities post school.  They will have opportunities to visit local employers, colleges and training providers, as well as accessing visiting speakers and bespoke activities to develop entrepreneurial skills.

They will begin to develop a careers portfolio, including investigations into sectors and jobs and an exploration of the local jobs market.  They will consider their own skills and abilities and how this might be translated into a possible career path.

14–19

Where appropriate, students can access one careers lesson per week within 14-19 Provision . All students will learn about the types of jobs available for them when they leave school and how to apply for jobs. They will also look at suitable clothing for different types of job interview and how to present themselves well.

Students will practice interview techniques and look at their personal skills and attributes. They will also learn about having realistic goals to prepare them for the future after 14-19 Provision. A member of the Job Centre Team will also come and compete a block of work with 14-19 Provision students.

Students also have the opportunity to attend local careers fayres, as well as the fayre held in school, which is attended by local colleges and other providers of education and care post 19. We are also developing links with former pupils to come and given informal talks around their next steps.

All students will undertake visits each year to local colleges and training providers to enable them to see and think about future steps.

Enterprise and Business Activities

Across the school pupils/students follow a curriculum of enterprise activities which include researching, planning and making high quality products. This can be from running a small café, to producing crafts to sell at the Christmas Fayre.  Students use decision making skills throughout each project to select products that are desirable to their customers, would sell well and make a profit for their business.

Work Experience

All 14- 19 students (where appropriate) are given the opportunity to take part in work experience. Students are supported by the Durham Works team to look at their skills and interests, and identify a suitable placement. Students can use the skills they have learnt in 14-19 Provision in a different setting, developing their confidence and understanding of expectations in the workplace.
