PHILOSOPHY FOR CHILDREN

The Philosophy for Children pedagogy provides our students with opportunities for open-ended discussions and critical thinking. By engaging in philosophical inquiries, students develop their ability to reason, ask questions, and express their opinions. This pedagogy enhances the social participation aspect of our Quality of Life Model by promoting respectful communication, active listening, and collaborative problem-solving. Over the past few years, we have observed enhanced thinking and communication skills, boosted confidence, self-esteem and improved behaviour.

Together, we have explored the criteria for what constitutes a good thinker and enquirer through P4C. Children today are faced with a vast array of conflicting messages from various sources such as their homes, schools, peers, media, and their thoughts about issues that affect their immediate and wider communities. It is our responsibility to help them develop moral and social values that will enable them to make informed decisions and become active and effective citizens. By encouraging them to explore these issues, we can help them build their capacity for empathy and self-awareness. This is particularly important in today's world, where technology plays an increasingly significant role in shaping their experiences.

It fills us with pride to witness the growth of our students as they become confident and eloquent young individuals, capable of reflecting on their education and the influence of their participation in our school community. Their ability to recognize the progress they have made and share their achievements with parents, governors, and guests affirms our conviction that the use of P4C has been immensely valuable for our students. Equipped with transferable skills, they will be well-prepared for the next phase of their lives.

Philosophy for Children and Conductive Education can work well together because they both value thinking, questioning, and problem-solving. When we do P4C alongside conductive education, we get to explore interesting philosophical ideas and concepts that relate to our own experiences and challenges. These discussions can help us think differently about our abilities and how we can overcome obstacles.
